Humanitas is the journal of the Newman Institute for Catholic Thought & Culture. Its core comprises select essays produced in our Catholic, liberal arts courses. It also showcases the best artwork, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from students, alumni, and friends of this program dedicated to serving the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

General Content Notes

While we welcome works that celebrate and explore religion, we are looking first and foremost for good works. We are inspired by the Catholic tradition in art, thought, and literature broadly conceived.

Art and Photography

You may submit up to five images per issue. We accept work in any medium––drawings, watercolor, oil, mixed media, photographs of plastic works, and creative photography. Note: we do not accept any images that have been supplemented or created with AI.

Poetry

You may submit up to five poems per issues. Given the size of the publication, individual submissions should be under 100 lines.

Fiction

We accept short stories and creative writing of any length up to 5,000 words.

Nonfiction

We consider both scholarly essays and narrative-drive pieces of a more personal nature. All nonfiction submissions should be between 1,500 and 5,000 words.

Review

Reviews should be around 1,000 words more or less covering a book or other piece of media released within the last 5 years.
