Humanitas is the journal of the Newman Institute for Catholic Thought & Culture. Its core comprises select essays produced in our Catholic, liberal arts courses. It also showcases the best artwork, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from students, alumni, and friends of this program dedicated to serving the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

General Content Notes

While we welcome works that celebrate and explore religion, we are looking first and foremost for good works. We are inspired by the Catholic tradition in art, thought, and literature broadly conceived.

Art and Photography

You may submit up to five images per issue. We accept work in any medium––drawings, watercolor, oil, mixed media, photographs of plastic works, and creative photography. Note: we do not accept any images that have been supplemented or created with AI.

Poetry

You may submit up to five poems per issues. Given the size of the publication, individual submissions should be under 100 lines.

Fiction

We accept short stories and creative writing of any length up to 5,000 words.

Nonfiction

We consider both scholarly essays and narrative-drive pieces of a more personal nature. All nonfiction submissions should be between 1,500 and 5,000 words.

Review

Reviews should be around 1,000 words more or less covering a book or other piece of media released within the last 5 years.

  • Current and former students, faculty, and staff of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as well as those associated with HuskerCatholic, FOCUS, and the Newman Institute.

  • No, while we love showcasing the work of Catholic artists and thinkers among UNL students, faculty, alumni, and friends, we certainly welcome all submissions that respectively explore the intersection of faith and culture.

  • Submissions open the month before the UNL semester begins (i.e. early August or January) and end 4 weeks before the close of classes (i.e. early November or April). This form serves as your confirmation of submission. You can expect to hear if your piece is accepted by the first week of November (Fall semester) or first week of April (Spring semester).

  • Yes, please let us know in the form that you are doing so and notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.

  • Fall 2024 will be our inaugural issue. All persons with a piece printed in our first issue will receive 3 complementary copies using the contact information from your submission. HuskerCatholic students, alumni, and friends can receive a copy free upon request once the issue comes to print.
